QUEST is a micro-learning mobile application intended to help parents of prospective college students learn about the college-going process.
Through its Department of Education GEAR UP grants, the K20 Center aims to help students in under-resourced Oklahoma pubic schools reach and succeed in postsecondary education. To do so, the K20 Center seeks to engage students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders in various programs to increase college enrollment and retention. Among these, reaching parents has been the most challenging.
QUEST was developed specifically to address this need. Through a simple, easily accessible mobile application, parents can view quick lessons about essential topics such as scholarships, student housing, FAFSA, and college fit. QUEST follows micro-learning best practices. Video, animation, simple interactive elements, and plain language ensure content is engaging and accessible for users. Additionally, all videos are recorded in both English and Spanish, utilizing fluent Spanish speakers to ensure that all members of our target audience can access the content fully.
QUEST is currently available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and development of content and features is ongoing.
I began this project by reviewing the literature on micro-learning to identify best practices and effective strategies. From there, I helped to develop a design for the application that would meet our stakeholders' needs. I created the original design documentation, UX, early mockups, and intermediate UI design.
Once QUEST was in development, I worked to identify topics for instruction based on a provided set of learning standards. I researched, wrote, and implemented course materials, tested new features, and attended video recording sessions.
